The study of rotating electrical machines is one of the most important parts of electrical engineering education. In order to properly understand the principles of energy conversion, excitation, voltage regulation, and machine characteristics, students require hands-on experience with real machines in a safe and controlled environment. Laboratory trainers are built for this purpose.

One such trainer is the DC Compound Generator Trainer, which is coupled mechanically to a three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor acting as the prime mover. This trainer allows students to study the working of a compound generator, its load characteristics, efficiency, and various test procedures, while also gaining familiarity with the coupling of machines and instrumentation required for performance evaluation.

 

A DC generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy by electromagnetic induction. When a conductor rotates in a magnetic field, an emf is induced in it, as described by Faraday’s law.

In the case of a compound generator, the excitation system combines both series field winding and shunt field winding:

• The shunt field winding is connected across the armature and provides constant excitation.

• The series field winding is connected in series with the load and contributes additional excitation depending on load current.

This combination allows the machine to exhibit compound characteristics—neither purely flat like a shunt generator nor strongly varying like a series generator.

When coupled to a squirrel-cage induction motor, which serves as the driving motor (prime mover), the generator can be run at constant speed, ensuring reliable and steady performance for lab experiments.

Construction and Components1. Prime Mover: Squirrel-Cage Induction Motor

• Type: Three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor.

• Power rating: Typically 3–5 HP for lab trainers.

• Speed: 1500 rpm or 3000 rpm depending on poles.

• Features: Rugged, brushless, low maintenance, high reliability.

• Purpose: Converts supplied electrical power (from mains or supply panel) into mechanical power to rotate the coupled DC generator.

2. DC Compound Generator

• Armature: Laminated core with slots, copper windings, and commutator segments.

• Field system:

  • Shunt winding: High resistance, thin wire, connected across the armature.

  • Series winding: Low resistance, thick wire, connected in series with the load.

• Brushes and commutator: Provide rectified DC output.

• Rating: Usually 1–3 kW, 220 V DC (depending on lab setup).

• Mounting: Rigid base frame with motor-generator coupling.

3. Coupling Arrangement

 

• Direct coupling between induction motor shaft and generator shaft.

• Flexible coupling with guard for safety.

• Ensures torque transmission with minimal vibration.

Ultraviolet (UV) exposure machines are special-purpose devices that make controlled use of ultraviolet light for different industrial, scientific, medical, and educational purposes. By carefully exposing materials to UV rays under a controlled environment, these machines enable processes such as curing, sterilization, surface treatment, photolithography, PCB manufacturing, and testing.

When the machine is designed inside a customized PVC (polyvinyl chloride) box, the construction becomes lightweight, durable, chemically resistant, and cost-effective. PVC is one of the most widely used plastics in engineering applications, making it an excellent choice for enclosures.

In this design, the UV lights are arranged inside the PVC box in such a way that the subject material—whether it is a printed circuit board, a coated substrate, a medical instrument, or a sample for sterilization—is uniformly irradiated. A built-in digital or analog timer ensures precise exposure, eliminating human error and ensuring consistent results.

 The UV exposure machine comprises the following parts:

1. Enclosure (PVC Box)

   • Made of rigid or foamed PVC sheets.

   • Custom fabricated into a rectangular or cubic form.

   • Equipped with hinges, latches, and sometimes transparent viewing windows with UV-blocking material.

   • Interior lined with reflective coating (aluminum sheet or reflective paint) for uniform light distribution.

2. UV Lamps / Tubes / LEDs

   • Special UV lamps (generally UVA, ~365 nm for PCB and curing applications; UVC, ~254 nm for sterilization).

   • Mounted on the top, sides, or bottom depending on design.

   • Arranged in arrays to provide even coverage.

3. Timer Circuit

   • Digital programmable timer or analog rotary timer.

   • Allows the user to set precise exposure duration (from a few seconds to several minutes).

   • Automatically switches UV lamps ON/OFF.
